It never ceases to amaze me that losing weight and/or getting in better shape can take forever. It stands to reason that it should, really. It took a while, usually years, to get all out of shape and squishy, right? My advice, FWIW (nothing), to those trying to make dietary and exercise changes is to pick a *little* something to make yourself healthier every month or so. This month: no booze + walk around the block every night. No other changes. Next month: Eat a little salad before eating anything else each meal and do something particularly sweaty twice a week (in addition to the things you changed last month). Changing small habits like that is barely noticeable, becomes a new, healthier set of habits easily (because they’re a series of easy changes rather than a bunch of abrupt ones), etc. Several months later, you’ll ask yourself where your gut went. Sudden changes, as you have noticed, can have sudden and painful side - effects.
Water is 8# (approx.) a gallon, and it’s not uncommon (frankly) to have a fair amount of partially digested food mass in you at any given point so you can see weight gain and loss in pretty wide swings based on how hydrated you are and (um) when you last ate. I would also suggest taking your weight *maybe* twice a week at about the same time of day relative to meals; I prefer mornings before shower. No reason to obsess over the number on the scale. Like I mentioned, that number can swing a lot based on factors that have little to do with your overall health. Those swings in weight measurement (and, if you’re like me, your mood) can be mitigated by purchasing a fat and water percentage measuring scale and normalize your weight based on water percentage as well as tracking your weight based on a moving average. If a water percentage - normalized moving average weight starts going down along with fat percentage (also on a moving average), you know you are actually losing the squishy stuff.
Bottom line: it’s going to take a while and it’s easy to get over zealous or otherwise painfully obsessive. Fortunately, it’s also easy to make a series of small changes leading to long - term improvement.
